Neurotoxin

The term Botox has become a household term to describe injecting neurotoxins into facial muscles as treatment for wrinkles.  Formation of wrinkles, especially in the upper face, has to do with repeated facial muscle contractions overtime.  Examples of these wrinkles are frown lines when we squint, bunny lines when we sniff, and crow's feet when we smile.

Botulinum toxins block acetylcholine release which signals muscle contractions.  Because our facial muscles stay relaxed, botulinum toxins can help smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.  Botulinum toxins are not permanent because the effects often wear off in 3 - 4 months.  Our office uses reputable brands of neurotoxins distributed in the United States, such as Botox (The OG of toxins) and Jeuveau (one of the newest FDA approved toxins).

The formation of wrinkles has a lot to do with our everyday facial expressions and the usage of our facial muscles. The repeated muscle contraction from facial movements such as frowning, squinting, and smiling over the years can cause the muscles that are responsible for these movements to stay contracted, leading to expression wrinkles such as frown lines, 11 lines, and crow’s feet. Jeuveau can help relax muscles and improve the appearance of expression wrinkles.

Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for the communication between nerve and muscle. By injecting botulinum toxin, the release of acetylcholine will be blocked and the targeted muscle will stay in its relaxed states. This leads to the reduction of surface wrinkles on the skin.

Side effects of botulinum toxin injection are minimal. A common side effect is bruising on injection sites which will recover in about 1 week. When over-injected, eyelid drooping may occur. Therefore, it is important to consult with a licensed medical professional for the procedure. Visible results occur 1-2 weeks after treatment and will last 3-4 months.
